This web site is the new home of Buxton Mountainman Nature Photography which is the showcase for my images and blog.

I am interested in all branches of natural history from the smallest insect to the largest mammals, both the rare and the common species. I still get a kick out of seeing something for the first time as in the case of the Bearded Tit in the image on this page.

I was lucky to spend two weeks in northern Baja California, Mexico, in February this year. Along with my partner, Janet, we stayed with my brother Phil and his wife Eileen and we were able to take a four day trip down the Baja peninsular to go whale watching at San Ignacio Lagoon. It was an experience I will never forget. The variety of wildlife we saw was incredible, the desert was stunning and I came back with over three thousand images.

I prefer to find my subjects out in the wild rather than at tourist hot spots but sometimes I will visit reserves especially when there is the chance of a cappuccino and a cake to be had!

My favourite environment is in the mountains but I don't get to visit them as much as I would like. I spend a lot of time on the moors local to Buxton in the Peak District of Derbyshire where I live and my favourite subjects are the short-eared owls.

I do not like to over use Photoshop and prefer not to clone things out of an image in order to tidy it up or even add things to improve the image. I take a photograph primarily as a natural history record shot which hopefully has  some artistic merit already provided by mother nature herself. Sometimes I will manoeuvre myself in to a position from which to create a more artisic image either by framing the subject or using the available light.

Some of the images on this web site have been cropped in order to re position the subject within the image or in order to enlarge the subject in order to show more detail. Where ever possible I try to do this in camera while taking the shot.
